The Nikon D80 could best be described as an advanced amateur to professional level camera, fitting it squarely in the so called ‘prosumer’ class. Its most immediate predecessor, the D70 built up a firm reputation as a bench mark for this category, and the Nikon D80 holds up well to the example set by its elder sibling.

Post capture image editing is available via a retouch menu. Cropping can be carried out in the camera and a number of favourite functions from Nikon’s ‘Coolpix’ range also find their way onto the Nikon D80 camera. D-lighting improves shadow and highlights detail. Changes are not applied to the original image, so its easy to make several versions with different changes and compare the results, but still have the original to edit on a computer later. Its also possible to combine two images with the Image overlay function.

Another ‘Coolpix’ feature on the Nikon D80 is the Pictmotion slideshow, which can include a mix of music. The lack of a built in speaker means that this feature is only actually relevant when the camera is hooked up to a television set using the AV cable included.
